What You Need to Know Before You Start a Home Based Business

So, you want to start a home based business, huh? But you're unsure of what you need to make this 'American-Dream' of yours come true? I was in the same position not too long ago. I was over $100,000 in debt I was working 2 jobs averaging 65 hours per week, and no matter what I tried I just couldn't get ahead. I knew that starting a home based internet business was just about the only thing I could do around my schedule, but I had no idea what I needed to do to get started.

Well, first you need to know what the investment will be. Although most franchises cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, starting an internet business may cost less than $100. You need to factor in domain name registration, hosting, shopping cart fees, advertising fees, and more.

You will also need a product or service. Many people think that they should always sell products that they are passionate about using themselves. This is not always the case. If you are passionate about skiing, but you're getting your website started in the middle of the summer it may not be the fantastic income producing machine you'd hoped for. But if you market a product or service that is in demand, you will obviously have better results. You may know nothing about ipods or Harry Potter, but you should know people are making tons of money with these items.

You will also need to know how to market your good or service. Google and other search engines are very powerful, but you may not have the knowledge to be able to utilize them quite yet. This is okay. There are plenty of references both online and in your local bookstore for this. There are many other cutting-edge forms of marketing such as Web 2.0, viral marketing, and other methods I won't be able to describe in detail here. But some of these methods are the most cost effective.
Is there any training available? If you are becoming an affiliate partner of a major company, do they provide it for free? Is there a one-time cost, or a monthly fee? If you are becoming a member of a business team, are they motivated to see you succeed?

And the most important factor you'll need in starting your own home based business is: your own determination. When I was just starting out I had a lot of questions, doubts, concerns, and fears. But when it came down to my daily activities, I always tried to remain productive. Always seek new information, new marketing strategies, new trends, and always seek mentorship. Being humble enough to know that you don't know everything is the first step towards enlightenment.
